Winter Storms
Winter storms strike Arizona regularly from November through early April. The storms can be quite violent, especially in the higher elevations and in Northern Arizona. Flagstaff is frequently hit hard by heavy snow, strong winds and bitter cold temperatures. Sometimes just an hour's drive north of the Valley can bring you into severe winter driving conditions. Use common sense and follow these safety rules to reduce the hazards of winter in Arizona. GET INDEPENDENT AND SELF-SUFFICIENT. Have plenty of food and fuel and check all battery-powered equipment. A portable radio or TV may be the only contact with the outside world if you are snowbound. DRESS FOR THE SEASON. Wear layers of warm clothing with an outer garment of tightly woven and water repellent material. Mittens are warmer than gloves and do not forget to wear head coverings. DON'T KILL YOURSELF SHOVELING SNOW. It is hard work and can bring on a heart attack, a major cause of death during winter storms. TAKE WINTER DRIVING SERIOUSLY. Winterize your vehicle. Carry a winter storm kit (see below). If you get trapped, stay in your car, but keep it ventilated, exercise, turn on the dome light at night, stand watches and do not panic. WINTER STORM CAR KITn Empty 3 lb. coffee can with plastic covern High-calorie, nonperishable food n Facial tissue and paper towels n Flashlight or signal light n Compass and roadmaps n Blankets or sleeping bags and extra clothing n Battery booster cables n Shovel, ax and knife n Windshield scraper n First aid kit n Sack of sand and two tow chains n Matches, candles and a catalytic heater n Fire extinguisher
